In this Livestock Community episode, Miguel Barrios, Ph.D. in microbiology and poultry nutrition and Business Development Manager for Monogastrics for the United States at Jefo, dives deep into the role of vitamins in poultry nutrition. He explains why little innovation has occurred over the past 30 years, largely due to foundational research from the 1960s and standards established in 1994. Miguel discusses the stability challenges of certain vitamins, advances such as feed formulation technology, and the emerging trend of precision nutrition. He also introduces protected vitamins and their impact on nutrient absorption. Highlighting sustainability, consumer demands, and the shift away from antibiotics, Miguel emphasizes the future need for new standards and ongoing research. He finishes with advice for poultry producers on optimizing their vitamin strategies for better flock health and production efficiency.

Our guest - Miguel Barrios

Miguel Barrios received his master’s degree in animal science from Kansas State University in 2012 and his doctorate from the University of Georgia in 2015, where he studied poultry nutrition and microbiology. He is currently leveraging his expertise in phytogenic feed ingredients and enzymes as Jefo’s Business Development Manager for monogastrics in the USA.
