Enhancing Dairy Cow Efficiency with an Innovative Precision Nutrition Solution
In the ever-evolving world of dairy farming, enhancing the productivity and health of dairy cows remains a top priority for researchers and farmers alike. A study conducted by Jefo experts and presented at the 2024 Annual Meeting of the American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) has unveiled a promising solution: a new feed additive that combines fermentation extracts, essential oils, and organic acids, meticulously designed to release the active ingredients gradually and effectively in the cow’s digestive system, ensuring optimal absorption and benefits.
On-Farm Trial with Real Results
Jefo experts Ousama AlZahal, Ruminant Consultant, Jean-Daniel Bunod, Biochemist Innovation & Laboratory Development, and Jean Fontaine, Jefo’s President, conducted a study on a commercial farm equipped with automated milking system to assess the effects of this innovative solution on 210 lactating cows.
Animals were divided into a treatment group and a control group (with and without additive, respectively). Over six months, the researchers monitored milk production, feed intake, and health indicators such as rumination time and reproductive success.
Results
Results showed that cows receiving the treatment produced an average of 2 kg more milk per day, compared to those from the control group. This increase was partly due to a higher consumption of pelleted feed, which was automatically adjusted based on their milk production levels. Additionally, a higher pregnancy rate within the first 100 days of the trial was reported for the supplemented animals.
Conclusions
The study suggests that this groundbreaking feed additive could present significant benefits to enhance milk production and overall cow health, ultimately providing better economical results for farmers. Further studies will be carried out to better understand how this additive work to improve productivity and to measure other benefits on lactating cows.
