Boosting Heifer Performance with Rumen-Protected B Vitamins – Insights from the 2024 ADSA

Presented by Victoria Asselstine at the American Dairy Science Association 2024 Annual Meeting, this study reveals how supplementing replacement heifers with a blend of Protected B Vitamins Jefo P(VB) can enhance their chances of reaching first lactation and increase milk production.

Introduction

The early development of replacement heifers is a critical factor in determining future herd performance. Calves face many challenges during key growth stages, especially around weaning, which can impact their long-term productivity. Victoria Asselstine, Jefo’s Ruminant Technical Service Consultant – North America, presented a study at the 2024 ADSA on the benefits of supplementing a blend of Protected B Vitamins during weaning to female Holstein calves.

The Role of B Vitamins

B vitamins are vital for many metabolic functions, but calves often produce insufficient amounts during stressful periods. Supplementation with Jefo P(BV) can help them transition successfully, increasing their odds of reaching first lactation and improving milk yield.

The Study: Setting Heifers Up for Success

In the trial, 80 Holstein female calves were divided into a group Control and a Treatment group with Jefo P(BV) at 3g/head/day for a period of 42 days (21 days before and 21 days after weaning).

Results: Stronger Heifers, Better Milk Yields

The results showed that Jefo P(BV) had a significant impact on the heifers’ performance:

Increased First Lactation Success: Animals supplemented with Jefo P(BV) were more likely to reach first lactation compared to the Control group (82.5% vs. 67.5%, P = 0.078). This demonstrates how early nutritional support can reduce culling and improve herd sustainability.

Higher Milk Production: Heifers that received Jefo P(BV) also tended to produce more milk during early lactation (81.35 lb/day vs. 77.38 lb/day, P = 0.12). This increase in milk yield has a positive economic impact for producers.

Conclusion: Early Nutrition for Long-Term Gains

The study emphasizes the value of supplementing replacement heifers with a blend of rumen-protected B vitamins during the weaning period. By supporting growth and health during this critical phase, farmers can increase the likelihood of heifers reaching first lactation and improve milk production in early lactation.

These results point to the importance of early intervention for healthier, more productive cows and greater profitability. By integrating Jefo P(BV) into your calf nutrition program, you can set your herd up for long-term success.
